AWARD: 2015 3rd Place, Designer of the Year Award, Individual Impact Award, Interior Design Society (Charitable Design Competition)

This 2015 idsIMPACT pro bono project was a Baby Nursery and Mom’s Retreat for a disadvantaged mother through Baby’s Bounty (Las Vegas), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. See the focal wall highlighting Sherwin- Williams low-VOC paint used for the subtle harlequin diamond wall treatment in a soothing blush pink color palette. Sherwin-Williams was the paint sponsor. Baby’s Bounty provides essential clothing and gear for babies born into disadvantaged families, to randomly identify a deserving disadvantaged young mother. At that time, the winning 20-year old mother lived in her parents’ manufactured home in a small, 156 square foot bedroom with her 3-year old daughter and 3-month old baby girl. She aspired to be a dentist and worked at a fast food restaurant. Her requested design, “Modern Vintage Hollywood Glamour,” was achieved with a serene, and restful space with a color palette of blush pink/peach and beige. It was designed for her to “dream her dreams and be inspired to be all she can be for herself and her children.” Designing JOI, LLC also created a bespoke wall art piece to add a whimsical touch. At “The Reveal,” the young mother and the grandmother cried lightly. They were so grateful and thankful.

Challenges overcame: 1) quickly assembling a team to complete the project, 2) the muralist improvised adding metallic glitter in top coat paint of harlequin design because no Sherwin-Williams metallic paint was available in the city, 3) obtaining donated items and furniture, 4) installing laminate wood planks on the ceiling in a confined area over closet ceiling platform, 5) removal of popcorn ceiling, 6) lighting issues.
